Comic-Con Has a Serious Gender Problem

Every summer, huge crowds of comic, TV, and movie fans make the trek to San Diego, California to attend Comic-Con International, one of the largest comic and pop culture fan conventions in the world — with over a 130,000 people walking the convention floor, attending celebrity panels, and getting exclusive first looks at new movies being released.

You'd think Comic-Con would want to be welcoming to all fans, but there's still a huge fan group being ignored and dismissed — women.

Comic-Con says it's proud of its inclusivity — noting that almost half of its attendees identify as female. But women at Comic-Con have often reported a very different experience — calling out rampant harassment and misconduct towards female fans, costumed cosplayers, and staff hired to promote movies and products (often called "booth babes").

The convention is also still not stepping up to equally represent female artists, actors, and creators in presentations and panels — especially in Hall H, the convention's most attended and prominent arena.

As we fight to end harassment, we must also fight for equal representation! Tell San Diego Comic-Con to stand up for its female fans and close the gender gap in presenters and panels!

According to analysis by Variety, Comic-Con presentations and panels are always extremely male-dominated — and often presentations had all-male panels. Only 29% of the panelists over the past five years have included women at all, and last year, only one high-profile "Hall H" presentation was not majority male.

Representation on these panels is incredibly important in order for female fans to see themselves in the stories they love. Including more women in high-profile presentations and panels will also help inspire a new generation of female artists and creators and help ensure an atmosphere of female acceptance in the comic community.

It's time for real change. Comic-Con needs to put its money where its mouth is and make sure its panels and presentations represent the diversity of the many fans attending! Sign my petition calling on Comic-Con to commit to equal representation on panels and presentations for 2019!
