Don't take funding from Pennsylvania's most impoverished public schools

Pennsylvania public schools don't have enough books, lead paint is peeling off of the walls and ceilings, and class sizes are ballooning out of control. But instead of giving enough money to our public schools to ensure that every child in Pennsylvania gets a quality education in a safe environment, the State Legislature has spent the last decade bleeding our school system dry. Now it wants to drain more money to pay for tuition to private and religious schools.

A recent study found that the state is currently $3-4.5 billion short of what it takes to adequately educate our children. Pennsylvania is also one of 14 states that regressively funds its public schools, which means significantly less state funding goes to the highest poverty school districts relative to wealthy districts. As a result, our public schools -- especially those serving lower-income neighborhoods -- are falling apart and failing our kids.

However, Pennsylvania state legislators are not voting to equitably and fully fund our public schools. Instead, they want to give that money to private and religious schools. Conservative lawmakers have just introduced Senate Bill 2, a voucher program straight out of US Education Secretary Betsy DeVos' playbook. If this bill passes, the state would give families taxpayer money to send their children to private and religious schools. The money for private school tuition would come directly out of state funding for local public schools.

This is a blatant attack on public education. I have lived in Philadelphia for nearly a decade and I am proud to be sending my son to kindergarten at our neighborhood public school this fall. I am terrified of what this bill will do to my son's school, and to public schools throughout the state.

Instead of handing over taxpayer dollars to education institutions with no accountability, the Pennsylvania legislators should equitably and fully fund our public schools, as mandated under the Pennsylvania Constitution. Sign this petition to tell the Pennsylvania State Legislature to oppose Senate Bill 2.

Don't let them destroy our public school system and use our tax dollars to support private and religious schools.
