As sad as it is CIM Group and the city council of West Hollywood have decided to tear down our beloved PickFair Studios, now known as The Lot, in West Hollywood California. While the campaign Save the PickFair Studios is trying hard to save what is left of the studio we have decided if they are going to tear it down we should have a nice bronze plaque (with Mary's, Doug's, and Charlie's faces engraved) remembering the studio to let people know that PickFair Studios once stood there. CIM and the city council of West Hollywood have promised to keep the offices which face Santa Monica Blvd., and the wall (facade) that surrounds them in tact. The studios are pretty much going to be torn down with the other offices sadly.
How this saddens us greatly we hope you will help us raise money and sign our petition to help put a plaque up honoring and remembering PickFair Studios. I think it would be a very lovely gesture and compromise with CIM and the city council of WEHO. I am sure Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks Sr., and Charlie Chaplin would be very touched and pleased if we put up a plaque remembering them and thier studios! Studio Background:
Pickfair Studios, was created in 1922 by superstars Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks Sr., and Charlie Chaplin. The studio became PickFair by Mary, Doug, and Charlie renovating a 1917/1918 studio by Jesse Durham Hampton. Together with D.W. Griffith (a revolutionary filmmaker and director), they had founded one of the first major independent film studios: United Artist (aka PickFair). Stars like Lucille Ball, Eddie Cantor, Gloria Stuart, Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, Rudolph Valentino, Gloria Swanson, Frank Sinatra, Myrna Loy, Natalie Wood, Marlon Brando, Susan Hayward, Greer Garson, Jack Lemmon, Danny Kaye, Laurence Olivier, Tony Curtis, and Buster Keaton all made films or went to PickFair Studios some way or another.
