Support Law to End Homophobic 'Gay Panic' Defense

How do you respond when an acquaintance identifies themselves to be gay or trans? Probably not by immediately flying into a violent rage! Nevertheless, there are many examples of people who have killed people because of their gender identity or sexual orientation and subsequently tried to use involuntary homophobic fear as an excuse to avoid the consequences.

To most, that kind of action would rightly just be considered a hate crime, yet for decades defendants have used a gay (or trans) panic defense to justify their actions, to varying success.

Finally, some lawmakers (led by Senator Edward Markey and Rep. Joe Kennedy) are advancing a bill, the Gay and Trans Panic Defense Prohibition Act of 2018, to put an end to this nonsense in federal cases.

In 2018, we've already seen a Texas man receive a light sentence after killing his LGBT neighbor after arguing the gay panic defense. And in Ohio, a convicted killer is arguing gay panic at his parole hearing in order to get out of jail. Homophobia should not be an excuse for committing heinous crimes!

That's why we call on the members of Congress to eliminate this defense as even an option. Pass the Gay and Trans Panic Prohibition Act of 2018 now!
