Demand the government takes action to save Sydney residents from toxic fumes

Residents of Sydney are being exposed to toxic fumes from cruise ships, causing widespread health problems.

People living and working around the White Bay cruise ship terminal on Sydney harbour say they are exposed to toxic fumes eight hours a day, 130 days a year.

The carcinogens from cruise ships are due to the lack of shore-to-ship power that would allow the ships to turn their engines off while at port, instead they are forced to idle.

An inquiry has already found that the decision to build the terminal at White Bay was a “serious error."

Two primary schools are located about 500 metres from White Bay and if a northerly breeze is blowing while a ship is berthing, the fumes settle on the schools.

Parents have reported that since the terminal opened their children are falling ill with frequent and more severe asthma attacks while many residents living nearby experience what they have coined a ‘cruise ship headache.'

We demand the government takes action now to address this problem. Either shore-to-ship power needs to be installed at White Bay or another port needs to be found away from residential areas.
