Stop the Incarceration Nation: Repeal Louisiana's Law Making Resisting Arrest a Felony Hate Crime

Louisiana's Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards signed a horrific bill into law recently. It makes resisting arrest a felony hate crime punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

"Resisting arrest" is a totally nebulous claim, and is often levied at people who make even the slightest movement or failure to immediately comply when being arrested.

"I knew a man who had a police dog biting him all over his body, including his genitals, who was then charged with “resisting arrest” because he did not remain calm and still," writes Shaun King. "I knew a woman who was charged with resisting arrest because of her sluggish behaviors during a diabetic attack."

This is just another tool police will use to ensure our prisons are stuffed with black and brown bodies. Sign now to tell Louisiana lawmakers to REPEAL this law!
