Americans for Truth About Homosexuality (which is considered a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center) led by Peter LaBarbera, is claiming that judge Sophia Hall should step down from a case because she is gay.
Civil unions became legal in Illinois in 2011, but now, 25 couples have come together to fight against state laws that define marriage as between one man and one woman, saying that they violate due process and equal protection.
LaBarbera says that because she is LGBT herself and believes in LGBT rights, she can't be trusted. Apparently, according to him, LGBT folks cannot be expected to uphold state laws. Tell LaBarbera that judge Sophia Hall isn't less capable because she is gay!
I am writing to you today because of comments you made concerning Sophia Hall and the case about the constitutionality of Illinois defining marriage as between a man and a woman.
You said that because Hall is gay and believes in LGBT rights, she should be taken off the case. Hall isn't any less capable of handling this case because she is gay. LGBT folks can be expected to uphold state laws, and it's offensive to say otherwise.
