Cameron: Do More to Boost Green Industry

  • par: Carin Cowell

British Prime Minister David Cameron must do more to support low carbon energy and other green infrastructure. Failure to do so will result in the UK falling behind and losing its position as a global leader on the issue. More importantly the push for investment in the industry will create much needed jobs and economic growth.

A boost would not only create a positive effect on the economy but it would also help to protect the UK from rising oil prices and remove our dependence on foreign powers for energy.

David Cameron promised that his government would bring about “the greenest movement ever”. If he is going to be true to his word he should take heed of Foreign Secretary’s letter calling for a boost to green industry. The letter outlined four key reasons why the UK must take action on this and received public support from the Development Secretary and the Environment Secretary.

To British Prime Minister David Cameron

We, the undersigned, support the letter by Foreign Secretary William Hague calling for more support of the green energy industry.

In a year in which the UK has returned to a recession, investment in low-carbon energy and other green infrastructure would provide a much needed boost to the economy. As Mr. Hague outlined, the move would result in:

  1. Revitalised manufacturing based on advanced low carbon supply chains

  2. Modernised infrastructure

  3. Reduced exposure to volatile oil and gas prices

  4. Lower energy bills achieved through efficiency

We would like to highlight the points that he made about there being “no inherent contradiction” with your current growth strategy. Failure to support green industry is a failure to capitalise on the potential growth and prosperity which could be generated by this industry.  Furthermore, we believe that action must be taken in order to avoid future energy, food, water, and climate insecurity.

Thank you for your attention
