WHEREAS:
AI Steals Our Work and Threatens Our Livelihoods
AI is catastrophic for workers. From employees laid off in favor of subpar AI replacements, to miners extracting the metal for data centers, to annotators exposed to abhorrent content to train content filters, AI harms workers of all sorts around the world. Moreover, AI does this by stealing our own intellectual property and cultural heritage and blending them into homogenous slop.
AI Warps and Weakens Our Students' Minds
Students offloading reading and coursework to AI learn nothing and waste their own time and that of their instructors and classmates They will be ill prepared to face the challenges of the modern workplace and civil society. The sycophancy of AI distorts students' understanding of the world, reinforces their prejudices, and corrodes their mental health and real human social relationships.
AI Devalues Scholarship and Creativity
Creative and critical thinking cannot be automated. Thinking is how we understand the world, make new discoveries, connect with one another, and make new and beautiful things. AI threatens to arrest human intellectual progress with the lie that unthinking machines can do all of these tasks in our place.
AI Poisons Our Planet
AI data centers deplete and pollute our air, land, and water. Their hunger for power accelerates climate change, while we are forced to subsidize their noxious activities by paying higher electricity rates. Moreover, all of these environmental impacts disproportionately affect our society's most vulnerable people, and our planet's most vulnerable ecosystems.
AI Destroys Society
AI has no moral compass – it is a tool in the hands of the powerful. It relies on inaccurate and stolen data, and it perpetuates settler colonial and white supremacist narratives and the theft and exploitation these narratives enable. It does not resist surveilling us, selling our secrets to the highest bidder, hacking our hospitals, or targeting missile strikes. The widespread, unregulated use of AI is inconsistent with the survival of free, democratic, and peaceful societies upon this earth.
WE RESOLVE:
To Resist AI
Whenever possible, to refuse to use AI products; to disable AI features; to boycott the corporations pushing AI on the public; to refuse to assist in developing or testing AI products; and to prohibit AI use in our teaching, scholarship, and administrative work, for ourselves and our students.
