People for the Re-opening of the Gillam Recreation Center

The Gillam Rec Center closed in March 2020 due to real concerns regarding Covid 19. This closure has negatively impacted the community, as well as, the direct result of the loss of employment of many Town employees. Due to low numbers of positive covid tests, the province has entered Phase 2 which has allowed many public buildings to open with precautionary restrictions.

Presently, the Gillam Rec Center remains closed, not because of covid, but because of the unfair restriction of funding from Manitoba Hydro and The Government of Manitoba. The Gillam Rec. Center is the heart of the Town where people can gather, socialize and build a sense of community when it's needed most. In a Province where many southern community centers, arenas, curling rinks are open, this northern vital location is shuttered because of "a lack of funding".

We ask that Manitoba Hydro and the Government of Manitoba stand accountable, stand with the people of this community and do the right thing which is to re-open the Gillam Rec Center immediately.
