Protect Our Right to Peace: End Private Fireworks in Wichita Neighborhoods

A significant quality of life issue in Wichita is being destroyed because the Fourth of July fireworks have escalated beyond reasonable celebration into what feels and sounds like a "warzone." The core problems are:

Violation of residential peace: fireworks now destroy that peaceful environment
Extended disruption: It's not just one night but multiple nights in a row, continuing late into the night, even into early morning.
Safety concerns: The intensity of explosions created fear about potential fires, with fires occurring throughout the city.
Animal suffering: Pets and others suffer from the noise and chaos
Health impacts on vulnerable populations: Some people with heart conditions, PTSD, and some combat veterans are particularly affected by sounds resembling bombs.
Inconsistent enforcement: While other forms of noise disturbance (gunshots, hammering at night) would bring immediate police response, fireworks are legally permitted despite causing similar disruption.
Minority imposing on the majority: Those setting off fireworks are disrupting the sleep and peace that most residents need and deserve.

Proposed Solution:

We, the undersigned, are calling for a comprehensive ban on fireworks within Wichita city limits, with one specific exception: controlled fireworks displays in designated safe areas handled by the City of Wichita. This would eliminate private fireworks use while still allowing for community celebration through professionally managed displays.
We wish to take back the residents' rights to peace, safety, and the pursuit of happiness in their neighborhoods.

Final points:

The people who create a nightmare for residents with the horrible noise also often use Mortar fireworks, which are illegal in Kansas. They are extremely loud and dangerous. They also shoot off fireworks well beyond the hours and days the City permits. And, as a final inconsideration to the residents of our neighborhood, they leave the residue of their noisy fun in residents' yards and streets for others to clean up.

We understand the City garners money by allowing fireworks in our neighborhoods. But we are the people who pay the taxes and from whom the City gets most of its revenue. Moreover, we are the ones who hire the mayor and city council and pay their salaries.

We ask no more than what is due us.
