In the 75 years since the United Nations (UN) was founded, there has never been a woman Secretary-General despite there being numerous qualified candidates from all regions of the world. Traditionally, the Secretary-General post rotates so that each geographical region gets its "turn." However, women have never had a "turn."
In 2016, seven women ran for the position. However, member states chose a man.
During the same period women have been chosen to head the International Monetary Fund, World Trade Organization, UNESCO and UNICEF. They have also shown their abilities as heads of government and major corporations. This proves once again that as many qualified women as men exist to run a global public organization like the UN.
Since assuming the position of Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres has made gender parity at the UN his priority.
We therefore call on women to step forward as candidates for Secretary-General, and for Antonio Guterres to implement his own gender parity policy by withdrawing from a second term and asking member states to choose a woman.
