#RiseUp End Police Militarization Now

President Trump signed an executive order allowing the transfer of military weapons and equipment to local law enforcement agencies. The order is a reversal of an Obama-era rule that helped curb the militarization of police by limiting the transfer of certain equipment, including grenade launchers, high-caliber rifles, and armored vehicles.

By arming local police with military weaponry and gear, the Trump administration is putting further strain on already tense relationships between the public and law enforcement.

As we saw during the protests in Ferguson, Mo., when police show up outfitted with military equipment, tensions quickly escalate. In fact, Obama’s decision to limit the kinds of equipment police are able to acquire was a direct response to the warzone-like conditions experienced in Ferguson.

Trump’s executive order is yet another sign that the administration has no interest in police accountability or oversight. But if Trump really wants to be a “law and order” president and ensure public safety, he must take a serious look at the effect of police militarization on local communities.
