An end to companies charging illegal fees when leaving a contract early

I had to leave talk talk early for personal reasons and was told I had to pay the remainder of my contract and they wanted 360.00 even though I explained I was not working and couldn't pay, they eventually wavered the fees. Why should we pay to leave a contract early if we are not happy with service or have to leave for personal reasons. They should not be allowed to do this.let stand up to these companies, would they pay us a fee if they terminated our contract early  Its time to put a stop to this, why would we pay for a service we are not going to have.
