Opposition to changes made to CLA Facemask specifications

The CLA has, as of January 1, 2013, revised the facemask specifications as it relates to Senior level players across Canada. As per CLA Technical Bullitens 11-05, and 11-06, the facemasks for players 17 and over now have to hing, and the chinstrap has to be fastened to the mask much like a hockey helmet.

The issue we have with this configuration, firstly, is the apathy of the CLA rulemakers. The new facemask specifications will not increase player safety, as related to head injuries, and will not in any way, mitigate concussion issues. The previous specifications were absolutely adequate to fullfil the player safety needs, and this petition represents that cause.

For senior level players, all of who are over the age of 21, this change represents an infringement of rights. Players above this specific age and playing higher levels of lacrosse, should be able, by all rights, to decide on the style of facemask they wear, as many of these players have been wearing these masks sinces Tyke. This is an assumed risk of playing lacrosse, and is amoung the least of assumed risks when stepping onto the floor.

Finally, in Technical Bulletins 11-05, and 11-06, the CLA makes multiple references to what is CSA approved for hockey. The reason these masks are CSA approved for hockey, is because they are hockey masks. They are designed to mitigate the intristic risks involved specifically with that sport. Lacrosse is a different sport, with granted many similar risks, but also many risks unique to lacrosse. When used as intended, the previous helmet configuration adequately protects the player from these intristic risks. Any rule change to these specifications does nothing but cause each player the cost of a new mask. Progress for progress' sake, should always be avoided.

By signing this petition, you are supporting the repealing of the facemask changes, as specified in CLA Technical Bulletin 11-05, and clarified in Technical Bulletin 11-06.
