Make All Chick-fil-A Franchises Breastfeeding-Friendly

On January 12th, Macy Hornung was at the soft opening of a new Chick-fil-A franchise in Fargo, North Dakota when her seven-month-old daugher got hungry. Macy did as any mother would, and started to feed her child.

She had only been breastfeeding her baby for a few minutes before the store's owner, Kimberly Flamm, ran over and ordered Macy to cover up.

Macy tried to explain to Flamm that her daughter does not like her head to be covered when she is feeding. Doing so would make the baby, who was almost asleep at that point, start screaming. And besides, North Dakota law protects women's right to breastfeed in public and private places.

But Flamm would not stop harassing Macy, attacking her for her "indecency" in front of men and children. She demanded that Macy either cover up or leave. So Macy and her family left.

No woman should ever be harassed and forced to leave an establishment because she wants to feed her child. That this has happened at a Chick-fil-A, a franchise that so vehemently claims to be family-friendly, is both disturbing and hypocritical.

Public outrage has forced Flamm to issue a public apology to Macy, but nowhere in her apology did she say that women should feel free to nurse their children in her store. And so far no one from the Chick-fil-A coporate office has made a statement of apology or even clarified their policy on breastfeeding.

I am a working mom who has spent the last 15 months breastfeeding my son in every place imaginable. And I am furious. Chick-fil-A needs to recognize that family-friendly is breastfeeding-friendly.

Please sign my petition demanding that Chick-fil-A CEO Dan T. Cathy put out a statement clearly stating that it is company policy to allow women to breastfeed in all franchises without being forced to cover up.
