Humanitarian workers in Gaza are risking their lives to support injured and disabled people

Meet 34-year-old Heba, a mother, a prosthetics specialist and humanitarian worker who is committed to helping injured people in Gaza.

Every day Heba leaves her two young daughters aged just 7 and 2 not knowing if she'll make it back home. She travels over an hour to Humanity & Inclusion's rehabilitation centre where she makes prosthetic limbs for children, men and women so that they can walk again. Leaving her children at home with her husband is daunting because she lives in the eastern area of Deir al-Balah, a place frequently subjected to daily shelling.

"Every day, I face the heart-wrenching decision of leaving my daughters behind. I constantly worry about their safety while I'm at work, but I believe in the importance of my role as a mother and as a professional helping people regain their mobility and dignity."

Since October 7th, Gaza has had more child amputees, relative to its population, than anywhere else in the world. On average, 10 children lose a limb every single day and most amputation procedures take place without anaesthesia.

Despite the ongoing situation, Heba remains committed to providing life-changing support to people because she sees first-hand how devastating life in Gaza is.

When Heba gets home, her responsibilities don't stop. She spends some much-needed quality time helping her daughters with their schoolwork and she also cares for her mother who suffered a stroke during the war.

Most days feel overwhelming for Heba. "I'm constantly torn between work, family, and caregiving. The emotional and physical toll is heavy, but I keep going. For my daughters. For my mother. For the people who depend on me at work."

Heba is one of the many humanitarian workers in Gaza who are dedicated to helping others, despite the risks. Although her work is essential, it is also dangerous at times.

At Humanity and Inclusion, we believe all humanitarian workers have the right to be protected while doing their vital work. Stand with people like Heba, sign the petition today.
