The Susquehanna River Is Sick. Take Action to Help Save It!

The Susquehanna River is a powerful economic engine for Pennsylvania and one of our region's most important waterways. But agricultural runoff, acid mine drainage, and urban pollution have contaminated the river for years.

The Susquehanna used to be home to a thriving smallmouth bass population. But these fish have been diseased and dying from pollution since 2005, many with sores and lesions on their bodies, leaving their numbers severely diminished.

Today our river is sicker than ever—yet the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) just left the Lower Susquehanna River off its list of impaired waterways. This list includes rivers and streams that are significantly impaired, and it designates them for additional study and new levels of investment in restoration.

We are asking the DEP to consider the threat to smallmouth bass and local economies and add the Lower Susquehanna River to the Impaired Waters List. This is the best chance we've got to restore the river to a healthy, swimmable, fishable waterway.
