Improve Maternal Health Care

About 1,000 mothers die each day in childbirth or from pregnancy-related complications. Sadly, due to poor access to quality maternal health care about 80 percent of these deaths stem from preventable complications. But even women who survive complications are often left with a disability, like a fistula, that add to her struggle to live and care for herself and her family.

The Canadian government has acknowledged that tragedy and disability can be avoided if more women and children in developing countries get access to basic, quality health care.

Childbirth should be a joyful milestone in life, not one marked by pain and suffering. Every mother deserves quality maternal health care no matter where in the world she lives.

Tell the Canadian government you support its efforts to improve make maternal health and want moms to stay a priority.
Dear [Decision Maker],

Thank you for asserting that maternal health is an international issue that needs to be addressed. I urge you to further Canada's leadership in improving the lives of mothers and children in developing countries.

Due to poor quality maternal health care, roughly 1,000 mothers die each day in childbirth or from pregnancy-related complications. This means that each day, hundreds of children lose their mom and will have to grow up without this influential woman in their lives. And each day, hundreds of unborn little ones never make it.

Those mothers who do survive complications are often left with a disability that makes it even harder to support themselves and their family.

Eighty percent of maternal deaths stem from preventable health complications. With better access to life-saving treatment and medical help, we can help others avoid these devastating outcomes.

A life without a mother is extremely difficult, as is losing a child. Basic health care is something that we often take for granted that would change the lives of many.
