Protect the Bill of Rights, Don't open the US to a Constitutional Crisis

Across the country special interests are working to move legislation that calls for a Constitutional Convention under Article V of the U.S. Constitution. The U.S Constitution has served us well for over 200 years, opening the Constitution is a dangerous, highly unpredictable method that could throw our country into turmoil.

The U.S Constitution gives us no guidance about how the convention would work, delegate selection or even what topics it would address. That means that a convention could set its own agenda and there is no legal precedent to allow us to limit its scope. The last a convention was held was in 1787. At that Convention, the founding fathers threw out the entirety of the Articles of Confederation.

If we cannot limit what topics the convention addresses, it could go as far as threatening the Bill of Rights itself. All our rights as Americans would be on the line. The freedom of speech, the freedom of religion, the right to bear arms, and voting rights would be open to elimination or changes. This could change the character of our democracy for the worse.

A constitutional convention is too dangerous for our country. Stand with the League today to oppose this perilous proposal. We will not stand idly by while special interests threaten to gamble with our Constitutional rights.
