Support Sex Workers' Rights

The criminalization of sex work puts sex workers at greater risk of discrimination and abuse. It also means that sex workers worldwide are disproportionately affected by HIV. It's time to change our policies because human rights are sex workers' rights.

Current policies focused on eradicating sex work have completely overshadowed sex workers' health and rights, creating barriers to care for an already underserved population. In order to qualify for HIV funding from the U.S., foreign aid organizations must sign an anti-prostitution oath (the APLO), stating they have a policy "explicitly opposing prostitution." In practice, the APLO means that many aid organizations simply do not serve sex workers in order to safeguard their access to these funds.

The APLO is an ideological policy that flies in the face of public health research and best practices. In practical terms, it hinders our own policy goals with respect to public health and human rights on a global scale.

Our approach to sex work and sex workers' rights must change. It's time to end U.S. policies that perpetuate stigma and discrimination against sex workers; all rights, all women, sex workers included.
