Dear State Superintendent Tom Torlakson, State Superintendent of Public Instruction of California
Stop the cuts to school safety in Inglewood Unified School District
Times are tough in Inglewood, the ninth School District in California to be taken over by the State of California, and we still have a lot of belt-tightening to do. But putting our kids in danger to balance the budget doesn't make sense, and it's not fair.
Earlier this year workers in the Inglewood Unified School District started receiving layoff notices. Campus Supervisors are often the first line of defense for students. They know the kids, their neighborhoods and their schools. They know, before anyone else, when something is wrong. Early detection is critical to prevent bullying and violence in Inglewood schools. Student safety staff can help diffuse problems before kids get hurt. They're incredibly valuable, and our kids need them.
Inglewood's kids have a right to feel safe at school; it is the only way they can learn.. We hope that you will make the right decision - to prioritize school safety. Parents, teachers, school staff, and most importantly kids, are counting on you.
