Keep the Community Charm: Highlands-Sea Bright Bridge Signage
The NJDOT is currently planning to put large green highway cantilever signs onto the new Highlands - Sea Bright Bridge. The signs are the same as those you would find on I95 or the Garden State Parkway. The giant signs will not only hurt the historic and scenic views from Twin Lights, but would also destroy some of the individuality and culture of the small beach communities on either side of the bridge. Please help to keep the community charm alive.
We the undersigned want to keep the community charm of the Highlands and Sea Bright communities alive. As you may know, the NJDOT is currently planning to put large green cantilever signs onto the new Highlands -Sea Bright Bridge.
- We do not want Cantilever signs (overhead green signs similar to those on I95 or the Garden State Parkway) These signs will obscure the view shed of the ocean, the of twin lights and from twin lights.
- We do not NEED Cantilever signs. Bridge speed limit is 35mph. There is no need for signs intended for highways with speeds of 55-65mph to be used on the bridge.
- We are suggesting small side signs affixed to lightpoles and u-channel posts similar to the current temporary signs, the signs on the old bridge, and those on all neighboring bridges.
- The presentation booklet from DOT passed to the aesthetics committee in 2006 did not highlight discussion on signage. The booklet in fact showed renderings of the bridge with the signage virtually hidden. While we recognize that the DOT made an attempt at public outreach on aesthetic issues, the signage topic was inadequate.
Please help us to keep the integrity of the communities in which we live. Thank you for your time and attention in this matter.
