Save the Coconut Grove Playhouse in Miami!
Funds are already earmarked to save the beautiful and historic Coconut Grove Playhouse in Miami. Originally a 1920s Spanish rococo movie house, the building was remodeled for legitimate theater and has spotlighted many of America's most notable actors, among them Jessica Tandy, Ethyl Merman, and George C. Scott.
The heartbreaker here is that the $20 million needed to restore the theater to its former glory has been sitting in the bank--waiting for Miami Mayor Carlos Gimenez to sign the paperwork necessary to get the restoration rolling.
Meanwhile, according to a recent article in the Huffington Post, the theater has become a nest for vandals and squatters who are daily putting more strain on the facility, making it harder to restore.
Tell Mayor Gimenez to sign the settlement of claims plan that will allow restoration to start on this American landmark!
We the undersigned are genuinely baffled as to how you could delay in signing the paperwork necessary to get restoration efforts started on the Coconut Grove Playhouse. The playhouse is both architecturally and historically important. It is an important specimen of Spanish Rococo from the 1920s and it has spotlighted some of America's finest stage talent. Please, please settle the claims that block this gem from becoming the fabulous asset to Miami that it once was.
