To prevent abuse of the elderly in care
I worked as a Care Assistant in several nursing homes. Every day I witnessed verbal abuse and low level physical abuse (rough handling). I showed my disapproval of this behaviour and for this my life was made hell by my colleagues. I now support people with learning difficulties and things are so different. My colleagues are kind, inteligent and respectfu to our clients. This is the calibre of staff you will attract by offering better wages. Don't our elderly who have paid into the system deserve the same high quality care as is provided to other client groups?l This is an abuse of human rights going on under our noses and in our own country.
We the undersigned wish all steps be taken to PREVENT the elderly being abused when they are PUT into care by families or Social Workers. The elderly are very vulnerable particularly those with dementia and they can be alone in their rooms with a male member of staff giving personal care- this seems to me to be putting people at risk of abuse. I know staff are vetted before being employed but abusers won't have a record if there are no witnesses. The answer to all of this is better quality staff - i.e. more money to attract such high calibre people.. Thank you for reading this. Yours Sincerely,
