US, Don't Force Canadian Residents to Pay Taxes
You can move to Canada, you can become a Canadian citizen, and you can surrender your right to vote in local American elections. But, guess what! The IRS thinks you are still an American!
That's right, folks. The IRS has found a new way to harass taxpayers--they're going after Canadian citizens who were born in America. And they're not just going after them for this year's taxes. Oh, no. They're going after naturalized Canadians for back taxes, fines and penalties and all.
Former American Maurice Williams, who became a Canadian citizen in 1973, notes that the IRS is now bilking him and Canadians like him for $10,000 a year in penalties for "undisclosed" Canadian assets, including Canadian retirement accounts. Even children of Americans born in Canada, who have never laid eyes on America, have to pay American taxes, the IRS has declared.
Tell the IRS that Americans who become citizens of Canada have relinquished their American citizenship and should not have to pay American income tax. To harass Canadians and force them to pay taxes to two countries is unconscionable and a form of taxation without representation.
We the undersigned think it's really sneaky to tax Canadian citizens who have no voice or representation in American government. Your attempts to levy outrageous penalties of $10,000 a year on people who have given up their American citizenship and are already paying taxes in Canada is immoral and subjects your victims to taxation without representation. Maurice Williams, who wrote a letter to President Obama asking him to intervene on behalf of naturalized Canadians, notes that he is not even eligible to vote in local or state elections because he has no American residency. Stop gouging Canadians!
