Mind The Gap: End The Gender Wage Gap Now

According to the Institute for Women's Policy Research, in 2017 female full time and year round workers made about 80 cents to every dollar that men made. There is an even larger gap for women of color, with African American women earning 62.5 cents to the white man's dollar and Latina women earning just 54.4 cents to the white man's dollar. Whichever way you look at the wage ratio - whether it be by taking the medians of men and women's incomes or looking at particular segments of the population - women are being paid less than men. We need to pay attention to this. We need to do something about this. We need to mind it. Because it's not ok. It's not fair to women. The gender wage gap is unjust. The Equal Pay Act of 1963 was aimed to abolish wage disparity on the basis of sex, mandating equal pay for equal work. While at the time this law did result in a decrease in the wage gap, the EPA of 1963 and other laws regarding equal pay are not enforced as much as they should be in order to close the wage gap. The Paycheck Fairness Act of 2019 is a proposed law that would address loopholes in the EPA of 1963, ensuring that employers pay women and men equally for equal work. 2020 Presidential Candidate Kamala Harris has also introduced a plan that would make "Equal Pay Certification" from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission mandatory for companies. Companies would be required to disclose pay policies when applying for "Equal Pay Certification". Companies that fail to achieve certification would be fined 1% of their profits for every 1% wage gap they allow to persist for work of equal value. This petition will be sent to VT senators and representatives, as well as any other representatives or senators from the states of others who also signed the petition. This petition will urge our congressmen and congresswomen to support laws and acts that will decrease the gender wage gap, including the Paycheck Fairness Act of 2019 and 2020 US Presidential Candidate Kamala Harris's plan to close the gender pay gap. This petition will also encourage our congressmen and congresswomen to advocate on the behalf of all of us to fight for income equality.
