This School Forced Another Teacher Out for Being in a Same-Sex Marriage

For 39 years, Lynn Starkey has worked as a guidance counselor at Roncalli High School. And by all accounts, she seemed to be good at her job. She was not just a counselor, but co-director of guidance, and in 2009, she was named Teacher of the Year. But once the current academic year is up, Roncalli High School has no plans to renew Lynn's contract — all because she is married to another woman.

Please sign this petition demanding that Roncalli High School change its discriminatory policies now and let Lynn stay.

Lynn's story comes just a few months after another guidance counselor, Shelly Fitzgerald, was forced out of her job for the same reason. When the school found out Shelly was married to a woman, they gave her a choice: she could either dissolve her marriage or resign from her job. Of course, Shelly did not end her marriage.

Two days after Shelly was put on administrative leave, the school questioned Lynn about her marriage. And now they've decided to let her go.

The school says they have every right to force Shelly to choose since all employees know that they are expected to support the teachings of the Catholic Church both in and out of school. That includes the belief that marriage is "between a man and a woman."

Schools are supposed to teach our children values like love and tolerance, not hate — but RHS's policy is doing just that. It tells their students its OK to discriminate.

Please sign the petition and ask the RHS Executive Board of Directors to change this disgraceful policy now.
