Tell Congress: Act in the Fight to End Alzheimer's

According to former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher, "Alzheimer's is the most under-recognized threat to public health in the 21st century."

Action is needed now to support all those affected by Alzheimer's. Send a message to Congress today.

Anyone who knows someone living with Alzheimer's disease understands just how devastating this disease is and how large a toll it takes on those living with the disease, caregivers and our nation. But there is action we can take today to address Alzheimer's as the public health crisis it is.

The BOLD Infrastructure for Alzheimer's Act (S. 2076/H.R. 4256) would improve the nationwide response to Alzheimer's by:

  • Advancing effective public health interventions across the country through education of public health officials, health care professionals, and the public on Alzheimer's, brain health, and health disparities.
  • Providing resources to state and local public health officials to increase early detection and diagnosis, reduce risk, prevent avoidable hospitalizations and reduce health disparities.
  • Supporting the needs of caregivers and care planning for people living with the disease.

Dear [Representative],

Please co-sponsor the Building Our Largest Dementia (BOLD) Infrastructure for Alzheimer's Act (S. 2076/H.R.4256). This important bipartisan legislation would create an Alzheimer's public health infrastructure across the country to implement effective Alzheimer's interventions focused on public health issues such as increasing early detection and diagnosis, reducing risk and preventing avoidable hospitalizations.

The BOLD Infrastructure for Alzheimer's Act was introduced by Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), Tim Kaine (D-Va.), and by Reps. Brett Guthrie (R-Ky.), Paul Tonko (D-N.Y.), Chris Smith (R-N.J.) and Maxine Waters (D-Calif.). The legislation was developed in close partnership between the sponsors, the Alzheimer's Association and the Association's advocacy arm, the Alzheimer's Impact Movement (AIM).

Former Surgeon General and Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Dr. David Satcher has noted, "Alzheimer's is the most under-recognized threat to public health in the 21st century." More than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's today and every 65 seconds, someone in the U.S. develops the disease. By mid-century, it will be every 33 seconds.

The costs of health care and long-term care for individuals with Alzheimer's or other dementias are substantial, and dementia is one of the costliest conditions to society. In 2018, Alzheimer's and other dementias will cost the nation $277 billion. By 2050, these costs could rise as high as $1.1 trillion. Alzheimer's is destroying our families, our finances and our future.

As researchers continue to explore methods of treatment, prevention, and, ultimately a cure for Alzheimer's, we MUST take steps NOW to address this disease as a public health issue.

The BOLD Infrastructure for Alzheimer's Act (S. 2076/H.R. 4256) would improve the nationwide response by:

  • Advancing effective public health interventions across the country through education of public health officials, health care professionals, and the public on Alzheimer's, brain health, and health disparities.

  • Providing resources to state and local public health officials to increase early detection and diagnosis, reduce risk, prevent avoidable hospitalizations, reduce health disparities.

  • Supporting the needs of caregivers and care planning for people living with the disease.

Thank you in advance for your efforts to support Americans living with Alzheimer's and other dementias and their caregivers. I look forward to your support of the BOLD Infrastructure for Alzheimer's Act.

Sincerely,
