Save Funding for Diabetes Research

The Special Diabetes Program is one of the most crucial contributions our government makes to helping the millions of Americans with diabetes and those at risk for developing the disease.

The program funds research on the cure and prevention of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes and has led to major improvement in care. But not only has the funding stagnated -- it's set to expire next year!

There are 24 million Americans living with diabetes. In some Native American communities one in two adults has diabetes. For these millions of people, the research and programs funded by the Special Diabetes Program could mean the difference between dying far too young and living a long, full life.

Diabetes is on the rise -- now is NOT the time to cut funding. Tell Congress to save the Special Diabetes Program.
Dear [Decision Maker],

Please support reauthorization of the Special Diabetes Programs at the National Institutes of Health and the Indian Health Service (S. 3058/H.R. 3668).

[Your comments will be added here.]

The two programs, the Special Statutory Funding Program for Type 1 Diabetes Research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Special Diabetes Program for Indians at the Indian Health Service, represent a significant proportion of the commitment from the federal government to combat, prevent and cure diabetes.

The Special Funding Program for Type 1 Diabetes Research at NIH, has resulted in the advancement of research that accelerates the understanding, prevention, treatment, and research into a cure for type 1 diabetes. Continued investment in this program will support ongoing NIH efforts and bring hope of a cure and better treatments to the children and adults living with type 1 diabetes.

In some Native American communities, one in two adults has diabetes. Unfortunately, type 2 diabetes is growing among Native American youth as well. The Special Diabetes Program for Indians supports needed prevention and awareness programs in tribal communities. It is critical that we continue to support diabetes prevention and treatment services and care for populations most impacted by this devastating disease.

I hope you will support efforts to stop diabetes by supporting reauthorization of the Special Diabetes Program and urging its passage this year (S. 3058/HR 3668).
