Make it mandatory to teach students about the reckless transmission of STI’s & ‘sexual deceit’

The UK government has introduced new guidelines regarding Relationships and Sex Education in school - Make it mandatory to teach students about the reckless transmission of STI's and 'sexual deceit'

Add 'sexual deceit' to the SRE curriculum. Encourage regular testing. Educate students on the consequences of not being transparent about their sexual health. Teach students that lying about their sexual health status means that the other party cannot give informed consent to sexual activity.

Sexual encounters involving deception that may qualify as sexual misconduct, include but are not limited to:
- Lying about the use of contraception to obtain consent from an individual (for example: stealthing - removing a condom during intercourse)
- Lying about having been tested for sexually transmitted diseases and infections
- Lying about ones sexual health status in order to obtain consent, e.g. stating that one does not have an STI, when in fact, they do.

All three of these acts can fall under the reckless transmission of STI's.

It is imperative that sexual deceit as a form of sexual misconduct should be taught in SRE. It can have earth shattering consequences for the party that has been lied to. Whether the deceit occurs through the removal of a condom, lying about having been tested for STI's, or lying about being STI free.

I am writing this petition because this happened to me. Someone I trusted was not accurate about the date of their last sexual health test or their sexual health history. Unfortunately I only found out about their misinformation too late.

Both chlamydia and gonorrhea can lead to major complications such as infertility. Gonorrhoea and chlamydia can spread into the uterus and Fallopian tubes, this can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). PID can result in the scarring of fallopian tubes, and damage fertility.

This is exactly why consent needs to be fully and wholly informed. We need to act now to change the attitude to sexual health among young people. I was never taught about sexual deceit in school, and I never knew that I had the right to speak up and ask for help when it happened to me.

I believe that if this education was more widely available in school, as part of the SRE curriculum, that this would not happen so often. If students are taught to be wholly transparent about their sexual health and their testing history, both parties can give full and informed consent.

Consent cannot be informed if someone is dishonest about their testing history or sexual health.

Education is power. Knowledge is power.

The new UK SRE curriculum states that:

'Pupils should be well informed about the full range of perspectives and, within the law, should be well equipped to make decisions for themselves about how to live their own lives, whilst respecting the right of others to make their own decisions and hold their own beliefs. Key aspects of the law relating to sex which should be taught include the age of consent, what consent is and is not, the definitions and recognition of rape, sexual assault and harassment, and choices permitted by the law around pregnancy.'

I believe that sexual deceit should be taught under 'what consent is and is not', pupils should be taught that by lying about ones testing history, lying about their STI status, or lying about the use of contraception, they cannot truly gain consent.

This education is vital for high school age students. Consent is multifaceted and complex, but with education, I truly believe we can go some way toward stamping out sexual deceit.
