Growing A Green Economy in Santa Cruz

The Obama Administration is relying on our communities to build robust local economy.  The Federal Stimulus packages and the ailing U.S. dollar cannot be our salvation, but instead a broad-based cooperative agreement to build sustainability into the social fabric of our lives.

Santa Cruz, California is a pioneering community of progressives.  Many timely initiatives growing out of a sense of unprecedented opportunity are now taking shape in this region, calling for a deeper unity in common purpose.  The potential to grow a truly green economy has never been greater.

This petition seeks to establish the stakeholders and allies of a local economic justice movement in Santa Cruz, and intends to generate real wealth out of new economic structures rooted in cooperation rather than competition.  Please sign it as a symbol of your commitment to recovery and renewal.

An economy founded upon Green Jobs Training, public-private partnerships, and social entrepreneurship will bring us out of the present uncertainty and resurrect our dreams of prosperity.  Moreover, all people must be included in this movement, not just the privileged or the educated.  It is for us to ensure equal access to the common-wealth that is afforded everyone in a sustainable economy.

We look to you as the leaders on the frontier of this uncharted territory... and are ready to grow with you in community.

We, the members of the wider Santa Cruz community, are intent upon growing a 'green' economy.  We are committed to this sustainable model being founded on principles of equity and social justice, ecological stewardship and personal integrity.

It is clear to us that the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King was correct when he said, "New forms of work that enhance the social good will have to be devised for those for whom traditional jobs are not available."  This is a time for social entrepreneurship that focuses on the development of community above the pursuit of mere commerce.  We seek to unite the many cultural movements now converging upon a single goal: promoting the general welfare.

As Van Jones, founder of GreenForAll.org, has put it, "We need to create a green wave that lifts all boats out of poverty."  Sustainability is synonymous with 'compassion', for no one can be left without opportunity in the new economy.  And this new covenant, this new social compact is about tending the garden of our local economy first and foremost.  It is the foundation, and it must be fundamentally 'green'.

While there is no single organization that can represent us all, there is certainly one aim that informs our movement.  It is the building of a bridge Seven Generations into the future, a bridge of natural balance and common-wealth.  We are not a society of individuals but a family who shares a world of abundance and interdependence.  Together we can make the world anew.

Living and acting with this deep intention as our compass, we declare that sustainable economy will be built from the grassroots, have a uniquely 'Santa Cruz' flavor, and ultimately be celebrated as a model of solidarity to inspire this nation in search of a dream.

Beginning with green jobs initiatives and community gardening programs, our own economic stimulus is already underway...

By signing this petition, we agree to do our part as engineers and stewards of the new economy.  And we agree to come together in this landmark year of 2009 to inaugurate our common purpose as a movement of movements...
