UNITY Eid Prayer 2009, Las Vegas

Muslims in the greater Las Vegas valley have been waiting for the day when the entire community will pray and celebrate Eid Day together in one location.
Precedence exists from the Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) of praying in a large group to show unity and strength among the Muslim community. This action shows that there is no segregation based on ethnic, geographic, or mosque preferences. Moreover, Las Vegas Muslims will have the chance to show their strength in numbers as a prominent presence in the valley.

InshAllah, Eid-al-Adha will fall on the Thanksgiving Day weekend this year. Both parents and their children will be off from work and school; therefore, an entire day of festivities can be planned after the prayer for families to celebrate. Local Muslim businesses can have booths set up with food and fun activities for the children. Some of the costs can be subsidized by the local businesses by purchasing booth space.

Opposing views & concerns addressed:

- A mosque already exists that can accommodate many for the Eid prayer.
It is abundantly clear that no mosque in Las Vegas has adequate space or parking for the entire community to pray together in one place and at one time.

- Most community members want to pray at the mosque on Eid Day.
Many community members have expressed their wish to pray in a large venue with the entire Muslim community of Las Vegas.

- Security will need to be provided for a large group of attendees.
Any venue can be set up with adequate security for the attendees, equal if not better than what the existing mosques provide now.

- Donations collected on Eid will be unevenly distributed among the mosques around the city.
Donation boxes can be set up for individuals to donate to the mosque of their choice.

- How will we decide who will lead prayer?
Imams from the different mosques can alternate leading Eid prayers on future Eid's.

- It is too much work to organize such a big event.
If we plan ahead, we will have enough time to organize this event. Many volunteers will step up to assist in this effort. All of this can be done with the help of Allah (swt).

This will undoubtedly be a moral boost for the city's Muslims and will become a highlight every year of and for the community. We urge you to put aside any differences and work towards a united Eid-al-Adha prayer and celebration this year.
