The WRC provides invaluable and necessary supplemental support to students across the curriculum in writing and reading. Without the WRC, many of these students (60% of them basic skills students), would not be successful in not only our Language Arts classes but in other content courses that require writing and reading like sociology, biology, child development, nursing, etc. Continued evidence of the student demand is seen in the long wait times to see a tutor, repeated usage from returning students, DASB public support through funding, and increasing numbers each quarter.
Currently, the WRC has no funding for Fall 2008. This will directly impact necessary staffing and service to students. The WRC will be forced to shut its door if no financial support is in place.
WE, the undersigned, believe that The De Anza College Writing and Reading Center needs to be institutionally funded. If our college is committed to student success and retention, it needs to commit not just in words but in actual, sustained funding.
