We want to introduce the basic reasoning of why cycling has such a wide range of positive effects in all dimensions of sustainability. By raising awareness and spreading our message that fostering cycling means fostering sustainable development we aim to connect a global network of likeminded people and institutions to support bicycle mobility. Furtheremore, we want to get the attention of political and other decision makers to demand action and seek commitment to strengthen sustainable development through cycling.
Therefore, we encourage you to sign this communique, to show some active dedication and to spread our message. Be part of this global concerted movement towards sustainability through cycling.

From Words to Deeds: Two Pages to Make a Difference
This communique is the nucleus of a complex campaign geared for action. Its objective is
- to introduce the basic reasoning, bridging to more comprehensive pamphlets,
- to provide a framework for action opportunities, as impulse for an activity roadmap to be realized and expanded upon world-wide,
- and to seek commitment and encourage an increasing scope of active dedication!
Mission
Muscles for Mobility: A King´s Way to Sustainable Development
On the road to a sustainable future there is one supreme vehicle: The bicycle! Even more than other modes of active mobility (walking, skating …) bicycling
- has a wide range of positive effects in all dimensions of sustainability,
- caters to a large diversity of mobility needs,
- is viable for countries in all stages of development,
- and offers plenty of opportunities for innovation; to increase access, utility, safety, and comfort!
For anybody serious about fostering sustainable development the support of bicycle mobility is a perfect opportunity to create effect; to demonstrate sincerity and commitment!
Good for You, Good for the Planet: The Basic Reasoning
The latitude of effects of more bicycling is truly amazing:
- less pollution, noise, congestion, waste of resources; no dependence on energy
- improved health, stress-resistance, performance capacity, and work-life balance
- added safety and quality of life in urban and rural areas, with minimum investment
- high compatibility with public transport systems
- more regionalized economic structures, local vehicle production and service jobs
- more social inclusion, a fair access to mobility
- strengthening of democracy, rebalancing of global economic development

Action
Ahead to Nature: Action Opportunities for a Concerted Global Movement
There are three main approaches to take action:
1) Raising awareness and support of the positive effects of bicycle-oriented policies: This should be backed up and put into continuous practice by the creation of a UN bicycle lobby, bicycle promotion tours, sustainable mobility centers, etc.
2) Launching and advancing initiatives and measures to foster bicycle mobility: This includes improving conditions like cycling-friendly regulations, infrastructure, services, urban planning and intermodality, tourism, industry, innovation and R&D support, but also localized campaigning to build up a lifestyle around bicycle traffic.
3) Originating and fostering innovations to expand on the potentials and attractiveness of bicycle mobility: Examples range from support drives, the enhancement of safety, comfort and orientation, and solutions for climate resistance and protection, over new logistics, sharing, and maintenance systems and infrastructure design up to regionalized concepts for vehicles, accessories, production, education, distribution, services, and policies.
A compilation of specific proposals and related initiatives is appended, help complement it!
The Future Needs You: A Call for Commitment and Active Dedication
All these words are of little use without related deeds. Your deeds! The best and easiest way to be part of the action is even good for you: Do Cycle! But there is so much more:
- Sign up; on the homepage, on facebook! Add your picture, your achievements!
- Share campaign, message, ideas and energies with your friends, with the World!
- Commit to as much individual and institutional action as you can afford!
- Initiate and advance action in your region, chiefly on the global action day June 17, 2012!
- Support the organizers, with practical work or donations, to multiply the impact!
