We, the undersigned Americans, join NEW FREEDOM in urging that any Federal financial assistance to the American automotive industry be tied to power generated by means other than gasoline or Diesel fuel.
We understand there is already a measure passed for re-tooling to take effect in 2009 and a general bailout under consideration to come from the $700 Billion approved for immediate use in 2008.
We strongly suggest alternatives such as electricity, non-food-derived ethanol, fuel cells, hydrogen generated on board the vehicle, methane, propane, liquid natural gas, etc.
We support the use of Federal funds to train/retrain American workers to be proficient in these areas.
There is no guarantee that any of the above will rescue the automotive industry. But at least this will provide a lasting and beneficial effect on American industrial skills in general.
We urge you to reach across party lines, help break our addiction to fossil fuels, and help bring America and her citizens to positions of leadership in a new, green, and sustainable world. Instead of being global debtors, we can become global pathfinders to a New Freedom.
