This petition is all about asking FirstEnergy to keep the promises they made to over 200,000 all-electric home, apartment, and condo owners for over 30 years. During the 1970s energy crisis, FirstEnergy enticed builders to build and consumers to buy all-electric residences. By doing this, FirstEnergy created a market for their unused, off-peak electricity that benefitted both the all-electric consumer and FirstEnergy.
However, once deregulation happened, FirstEnergy was able to sell this off-peak electricity on the regional grid for a higher profit than they could sell it to the all-electric customer. Thus, they pulled the discount in May 2009.
After a huge public outcry from the rate shock of doubled winter electric bills, and two interventions by Governor Strickland, the PUCO temporarily ordered FirstEnergy to restore the all-electric rate through May 31, 2011, pending PUCO review of the issue.
Currently, there is NO PERMANENT SOLUTION OR GUARANTEE THAT THE ALL-ELECTRIC DISCOUNT RATE WILL REMAIN AFTER 2011.
