Malaysia, Do Not Return Saudi Man to Face Death Sentence

  • da: Concerned Citizens of the World

According to Human Rights Watch, on February 7, 2012, Hamza Kashgari had to flee Saudi Arabia to Malaysia in fear of his life. Earlier he had posted a story on his Twitter account about a conversation between him and the Prophet Muhammad. A day later, Saudi officials decided that he was an apostate and that he should face a death sentence.

On February 9, he was arrested in Malaysia and is believed to being held by security forces there. As Kashgari has not committed any crimes in Malaysia, Human Rights Watch believes that he is being held at Saudi Arabia’s request. If he is sent back he will face almost certain death.

Tell Malaysia to not send Kashgari back to Saudi Arabia as they would be contributing to his guaranteed imprisonment and a highly likely death sentence.

We the undersigned sincerely ask the Malaysian government to not send Hamza Kashgari back to Saudi Arabia. His punishment for his crime has already been decided and he is most likely going to be given a death sentence. As Malaysia does not have an extradition treaty with Saudi Arabia, Malaysia is not obligated to send anyone back. As returning Kashgari would be aiding his death sentence, we ask that you do not send him back.

Thank you.
