Not My Vote unless you support equal rights for Bahamian women.

Under the current laws of the Bahamas, women do not have the right to confer citizenship on their children. If a Bahamian woman marries a non-Bahamian and gives birth outside the country, her child has to wait 18 years to apply for citizenship and renounce the citizenship of his/her place of birth to be fulfill the requirements of citizenship. A child born of a Bahamian man has automatic citizenship on birth, and is entitled to keep his/her dual citizenship.
Further, if a Bahamian woman moves home with her husband and family, he must renounce his citizenship if he wishes to obtain Bahamian citizenship. For a Bahamian man, his wife is only required to take an oath of allegiance. She can maintain citizenship to her country of origin.
This system undermines our entire democracy.
In 2002, we allowed politics to stop us. In 2012, the year we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the women’s suffrage movement in the Bahamas, let nothing stop us.
Support the Not My Vote campaign, and only vote for candidates who support equal rights for women in the Bahamas. Tell the candidates vying for office in the 2012 general election that the people say, support the right of Bahamian women to confer citizenship to their children.
In the year we celebrate their accomplishments, let us make the women suffragettes proud and carry forth their mission. Equal rights for all in the Bahamas.
