Revise the Humane Slaughter Act
The majority of the animals raised for meat consumption in the United States today live thier whole lives on industrialized factory farms, where they are treated more as commodities than as living, breathing creatures. Animals on many factory farms have to endure a lifetime of horrible abuses until they are eventually slaughtered.
One federal law that deals with the lives of these animals--the Humane Slaughter Act--only offers a modest amount of protection.
There are several changes to the Humane Slaughter Act that can be made to make it a stronger law and help better the lives of factory-farmed animals:
-Amendment 1: Would re-word the law to include all animals that are currently raised on factory farms (right now, poultry and birds are excluded)
-Amendment 2: Would broaden what the law applies to--right now, the law only affects how the animal is treated at the moment of its slaughter. This amendment would make it so that the law protects the animal for its entire life.
-Amendment 3: Would impose much stricter regulation of factory farms and harsher penalties on farms when humane standards arent met.
We ask that Congress take the steps to revise the Humane Slaughter Act by adding these three amendments to the law.
We the undersigned supporters of the cause of this petition earnestly ask that you be a voice for the millions of animals raised on factory farms in the United States. We ask that you support the revision of the Humane Slaughter Act to help improve the lives of these animals and end the cruelty and inhumane conditions many of them must endure for thier whole lives.
Thank you for taking the time to consider our cause.
