Somalia, Protect Your Journalists

  • da: Concerned Citizens of the World
  • destinatario: Somali Transitional Federal President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and Somali Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali

Being a journalist in Somalia is becoming increasingly dangerous as in the last couple of months, two journalists have been murdered. According to Amnesty International, the danger for journalists has been increasing over the last few years as since 2007, more than 24 journalists have been murdered. The last two murders really show the level of danger and violence against journalists. On December 18, 2011, Abdisalan Sheik Hassan was murdered by a man in a military uniform by being shot in the head and on January 28th, 2012 Hassan Osman Abdi was murdered outside of his home. Perhaps one of the most tragic parts about these recent murders is that no one has been charged or held accountable for the murder of either of these men despite promises by the government.

As the murder of journalists is becoming increasingly common in Somalia, the government must do more to protect them as no one deserves to live in fear or die for simply informing the public of what is happening in their country. Journalists are an important part in the dialogue between governments and the people.

Tell the government of Somalia to do more to protect and support their journalists as these murders are unacceptable.

We the undersigned sincerely ask the government of Somalia to do more to protect and support journalists. With the recent murders of Hassan Osman Abdi and Abdisalan Sheik Hassan, it is clear that journalists are being unrightfully targeted. Furthermore, in the past five years, over 24 journalists have been killed. This must stop as journalists are not only innocent civilians but they are also an important part of the communication and dialogue between the government and its citizens.

Please show your citizens that you support them by doing more to protect these journalists.

Thank you.
