Stop the Stealth Attack against the Endangered Species Act - Take Action and Pass it on!
A leaked document obtained by the National Wildlife Federation has revealed that the Bush administration is planning on weakening the Endangered Species Act in its last few months in office.

was very disheartened to see news that the Bush administration is planning to weaken the Endangered Species Act in its last months in office.
Since 1973, the Endangered Species Act has served as America's safety net for wildlife. It has saved hundreds of species from extinction, put hundreds more on the road to recovery and safeguarded the habitats upon which they depend.
The purpose of the Endangered Species Act is simple: to prevent America's native fish, plants and wildlife from going extinct. To date, the Endangered Species Act has been 99 percent successful in achieving this goal of preventing extinctions.
Weakening this law in any way is unacceptable. Of the actions being considered, I am very concerned about:
* The elimination of informal consultations and reduction of formal consultations.
* New justifications for avoiding or minimizing Endangered Species Act consultations based on "Lack of Causation" arguments.
* The creation of an arbitrary deadline that will be used to enable even the most harmful projects to escape Endangered Species Act scrutiny.
With global warming now seen as the single biggest threat to wildlife, if anything, the Administration should be substantially strengthening conservation laws such as the ESA to protect species and habitats from sea level rise, intensified droughts and storms and other harmful effects of global warming.
Repeatedly, polls have shown that large majorities of the American people want to maintain or strengthen the Endangered Species Act. I speak up on behalf of that majority to make sure you know we will not stand for any actions to weaken this important law.
Now more than ever, it is imperative that we protect the world that was entrusted to our care.
