Sudan, Stop Violence against Protesters and Students

Throughout Sudan university students have been peacefully protesting against government corruption, the destitute economic situation and social issues. Their protests coincide with pro-democratic intellectuals calling for government accountability and freedom of the press. However according to Human Rights Watch, government forces have started repressing these protests by beating, threatening and arresting peaceful protesters and government critics.

These aggressive and violent tactics by the government shows their determination in silencing their critics and controlling the population. This is unacceptable as it undermines the Sudanese people’s human rights and the country’s democratic values.

Tell the President of Sudan that violence is unacceptable and the abuse of protesters must stop.

We the undersigned demand that the government of Sudan stop the violent and aggressive tactics against peaceful protesters and government critics. Freedom of speech and freedom of the press is essential in building a democratic and peaceful state. Repression by government forces is only showing the Sudanese people that their government is fighting against them, not for them. It is also a clear violation of human rights and this violence will only destroy the Sudanese people and their country.

We ask you, Honourable President Umar Hassan Ahmad al-Bashir, to show your people and the world that you support human rights and democratic values. Show your people that you want to build a strong, peaceful nation by stopping these aggressive tactics by government forces.

Thank you.
