Take the Bible class out of Texas Schools

Our government has a rule of separation of church and state, but a new bill has been put into place that seems to be ignoring this rule. The House Bill No. 1287 has now set into motion that a Bible class will be required in Texas schools starting the school year of 2009-2010. While the class is not required to graduate, it is still defiant of the rule of separation of church and state. No one religion should be taught in our schools, even if Christianity is seen as the majority in this country. Other religions are just as important and should be seen as equals to Christianity. I urge you to sign this petition to take out this class in Texas Schools and put the rule of separation of church and state first, where it belongs, unless a World Religions Class is also required!
We the undersigned do not believe that the House Bill No. 1287 should have been able to place a Bible class in our public schools. Our government is based on freedom of religion as well as the separation of church and state. This bill goes against that separation of church and state, which we do not believe it should be allowed to do.
Even though this class is not required to graduate, we feel that it is still going to pressure the Christian religion onto students. Students will be pressured by fellow students as well as teachers and school counselor to take this course, which we feel shouldn't be in schools to begin with.
By placing this class into our public schools, we are rejecting other religions. It is not fair to require classes on one religion and not others. There are more religions than just Christianity. All religions should be viewed as equal. This Bible class does not allow this view.
We ask you to fix this problem by either working on removing this class from our schools or requiring other religious classes, such as a World Religions Class, as well. It isn't right doing this for only one religion. It needs to be "All Religions or None".
