Tuesday night, countless people across America went to bed with something many hadn't felt in a long time.
Hope.Voters showed up in huge numbers and sent a wave of new leaders into office. From Congress to governors' mansions to statehouses, the country chose change. And they
made history doing it.
Sign the petition and tell Democratic leaders to use this historic moment boldly and never back down from delivering for the people who elected them!In Georgia, Keisha Lance Bottoms became the
first Black woman ever elected governor in America. In New Mexico, Deb Haaland became
the first Native American woman elected governor. Minnesota sent Peggy Flanagan to Washington as the
first Native woman in the Senate. Michigan elected Abdul El-Sayed, who will be
the first Muslim senator, and New Hampshire chose Chris Pappas,
the first openly gay man in the Senate.Texas elected Gina Hinojosa as its first Latina governor. California chose Xavier Becerra, its first Latino governor in more than 150 years.
Five Black governors will now serve at the same time, more than ever before. Kansans sent a Democrat,
Adam Hamilton, to the US Senate "for the first time in nearly a century." And Illinois elected Juliana Stratton, making it the first state with two women of color representing it in the Senate.
These wins belong to the people who earned them. For years, communities of color and LGBTQ+ Americans have laid the groundwork of our most groundbreaking, lifesaving political movements.
Tuesday was their night.The
wave reached deep into the states too. Early counts show Democrats gained more than 250 state legislative seats. Arizona has full Democratic leadership for the first time in 60 years. Wisconsin and Pennsylvania are fully blue again for the first time in more than a decade. Michigan and Minnesota won back full control, and Democrats will lead the Texas state house for the first time since 2002. In North Carolina, voters flipped the state house and ended the Republican supermajority.
Democrats also won governor's races in Georgia, Iowa, Nevada, Ohio, and Texas. For the first time since 2010, they'll lead most of the nation's states.
This is who we are -- a diverse nation that thrives on our differences, working together to make this nation a place where we can all thrive together. And finally, our representation reflects that. Representation like this doesn't just matter for optics. It is how real change gets made.
Here's what that can mean for real people, really soon. With Democratic control in the House and Senate,
we can finally begin to investigate the many, many shady dealings of the Trump administration. The Senate can block any future Trump nominations to judge positions. This would
stop Trump from potentially nominating two more Supreme Court justices to an already alarmingly conservative body that has handed over presidential immunity, enabled mass inhumane deportations, gutted reproductive healthcare, and allowed for LGBTQ+ discrimination at the state level.
New leaders want to expand Medicaid, provide affordable or free childcare, free school lunches, and invest in public services that would allow everyone to prosper. In states that have been gerrymandered for years, fair maps could finally let voters choose their leaders moving forward, instead of the other way around.
This is a once-in-a-generation chance, and it won't last forever. Some will push Democrats to slow down, scale back, and settle for less. The families who voted for change deserve leaders who stand firm and keep their promises.
