Keller Independent School District's Board of Trustees have written a specific guideline that would protect teens and children in that school system from being bullied on the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation. Seems like a no brainer because transgender and gay school children and teens do get bullied, sometime a lot.
So why is Glenn Beck, a radio personality, opposing it? Beck posted to his Facebook page that he would attend an upcoming school board meeting. And he encouraged other people to attend--for the purpose of defeating a perfectly sensible addition to the school district's already extant bullying policy. Opponents of the new language have stooped to name calling and irrationality. One branch of the Tea Party movement has painted the board members who want to protect LGBT young people as "Satanists" and "Communists." As a result of this pressure the school board has postponed its vote on the measure. Please join with me in asking the Keller Independent School District's Board of Trustees to stand firm against this opposition and vote to add the new language to their anti-bullying policy so that LGBT students have the protection they need. As we can see, bullying isn't limited to the classroom.
Dear Keller Independent School District's Board of Trustees:
We the undersigned first wish to thank you for writing an addendum to your anti-bullying policy that specifically protects LGBT young people. You are absolutely correct in your belief that these children and teens are more than usually vulnerable and a specific policy that prohibits discrimination is needed on their behalf. We now ask that you stay the course you have bravely started and vote to add the new language to the policy. Please don't allow yourselves to be bullied by Glenn Beck and a few other conservative crackpots. They do not have a good argument, and their anti-acceptance agenda is fairly obvious in the name-calling tactics they have employed. Please vote to protect LGBT young people in your schools. We know that you know it's the right thing to do.
