Bad-smelling and chemical-filled air from large-scale industrial farms is ruining the quality of life and enjoyment of outdoor activities for those who live nearby. Manure-generated contaminants like ammonia and hydrogen sulfide, combined with the stench of decaying animals, makes nearby residents sick.
According to farmer Tom Frantz of the San Joaquin Valley, "Ammonia emissions from factory farm dairies are causing the highest fine particulate matter levels in the United States, which seriously harms our health while EPA has done nothing,"
The EPA has failed to address petitions filed in 2009 and 2011 by the Environmental Integrity Project and the Humane Society of the United States, which requested that they categorize large factory farms as sources of pollution under the Clean Air Act. Currently, they have not set air quality standards for factory farms, nor have they set health-based standards for ammonia emissions from these farms.
