NYC, Stop Killing Your Geese!

Every summer, a quiet massacre takes place in New York City. US Department of Agriculture workers round up hundreds of Canada Geese from city parks and ship them out for slaughter. This ugly round up takes place in June and July when the birds are molting and unable to fly. And this mass killing is taking place even though the parks' goose population is far lower than last year.

Animal advocates are justifiably appalled. Geese generally pose no threat to humans, except for the very rare airplane bird strike. David Karopkin, Director of GooseWatch NYC, says that blaming geese for the 2009 crash of a US Airways jet is wrong and that airlines should make their planes sturdier and ensure that pilots are awake and alert.

Tell the New York City Department of Environmental Protection to live up to its name and protect Canada geese in the city's parks!

We the undersigned are saddened by the massacre of your city's geese and we think you should desist from this policy.

Geese represent almost no danger to humans. The jet crash of 2009, which was blamed on a bird strike, could probably have been avoided with better equipment maintenance. In any event, you have no right to decimate other species on behalf of humans.

Stop the slaughter of New York City park geese!
