We, the undersigned residents believe that the rural nature of Putnam County is a great asset. Therefore, we again oppose plans to widen and straighten Peekskill Hollow Road (PHR). We ask that the final design plan (June 2008--pin#675748) be scrapped in favor of preservation of PHR within its present boundaries. In addition to decreased property values, decreased rural scenic value, tree and historic stone wall removal, this project will actually increase traffic speeds and truck traffic, making our road less safe for the families who live along PHR! We believe this project is being thrust on us for no justifiable reasons, and that the numerous adverse effects far outweigh any claimed benefits.
We support only necessary maintenance and/or renovations of PHR and bridges, which will keep our road safe, rural, residential, and beautiful.
We ask for restrictions on thru-truck traffic over 20,000 lbs. (except local deliveries), and a 25 mph speed limit from Putnam Valley High School speed zone to Oregon Corners.
We also call on the Putnam County Legislature to support historic designation and protection backed by law, based on the Town of North Salem New York Historic Road Preservation Law, and on the Towns of Kent and Putnam Valley to enact such law to give permanent protection to PHR.
