The Institute of Island Studies, http://www.upei.ca/iis/, is a unique and respected program attached to the Univeristy of Prince Edward Island. The university has been faced this year 2013, with a 9 million dollar shortfall and must make cuts to its programs. It has chosen to cut Island Studies.
The culture of economic austerity is wreaking havoc with the health and welfare of citizens all over the world. Cutbacks in health, education and the attending institutions that sustain them at all levels, are well known for their delterious affects. It is time to fight back.
The action of The University of Prince Edward Island to cancel a program that is respected world wide , that only costs the institution ONE salary is just another example of the cultural and scientific slaughter attendant to the austerity solution to the current economic slump.
Tell the University of Prince Edward Island, and the Canadian government that we are sick of the austerity approach because of the damage it causes.

The decision to cut the funding for The Institute of Island Studies is wrong and unjustified. This institute has an international reputation and generates unique and important data for island studies and policy, and is led by our own Prince Edward Island.
Please reconsider the cultural and scientific losses of such a cut versus the actual COST of the program. The benefits of the studies undertaken by The Institute of Island Studies far outweigh the finacial cost.
